Officials at the Rochester Fire Department want to be prepared just in case an influenza pandemic, much like the 1918 outbreak that killed millions of people worldwide, occurs.

The fire department planners are pretty confident that they could respond to more than 3,500 pandemic-related calls in a one-year period if pandemic breaks out. The department is, furthermore, looking to raise $30,000 to buy extra supplies which include face masks, foot coverings, safety suits and biohazard bags used to transport used gloves and masks for medical incineration.

A department submitted an official request to the City Council asking for $29,890 in supplies, enough to handle an estimated 10 pandemic-related calls per day for a one-year period above and beyond normal calls.
